35RZ09 - The Opposition Leader Appointment Act of 2005

WHEREAS the Organic Law requires the selection of a “Right Honourable Leader of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition” (or Opposition Leader), except in times when the entire Cosâ supports the Government, and

WHEREAS the method specified in The Opposition Leader Appointment Act (24RZ47) has been found unworkable, so much so that in recent years no Opposition Leader has been appointed,

THEREFORE the Ziu hereby enacts the following method for the election of the Opposition Leader.

On each Vote of Confidence, any Member of the Cosâ who votes “No” may, if he wishes, also designate his selection for Opposition Leader. The votes for Opposition Leader will be tallied, and the person who received the most votes (and who himself voted “No” on the Vote of Confidence) will be appointed Opposition Leader until the next Vote of Confidence. If no eligible person receives votes, or if the alignment of persons and parties in the Cosâ changes in such a way that the elected Opposition Leader is clearly no longer representative of the loyal Opposition, the King will appoint as temporary Opposition Leader (until the next Vote of Confidence) whatever Member of the Cosâ, in the King’s opinion, will best serve to represent the loyal Opposition.
